About us
The Sheffield University Sign Language Society offers everyone the opportunity to learn about British Sign Language (BSL) and Deaf culture in a relaxed environment with support from a friendly team of teachers and other society members. You can take part in our lessons or just come along to our socials.
What We Do
We aim to promote the use and knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL), both to provide a new means of communication as well as to raise awareness of the Deaf Community.
Our society welcomes anyone with a desire to learn or teach British Sign Language (BSL). We provide beginner BSL classes in an informal setting and hold social events throughout the year.
Classes
New memberships for this semester is open again for all students and members of the public over the age of 18 (under 18s may be allowed, if accompanied by a parent/guardian). Our current session times are Wednesdays, 7-8.30pm for Beginners 1 & 2 courses. Venues for the sessions will be posted on our Instagram and emailed to members.
Our Beginners courses are aimed at students who wish to learn the basics of British Sign Language. You can learn: situations, finger spelling, basic dialogue and learn about deaf culture. This is a very interactive course, guaranteed to be fun and informative.
Classes in the 9-11-week course are available to all who pay online membership! You can find out more and purchase your membership below.

Prices:
1 Year, £25 for University of Sheffield students (includes a £2 donation to HDDP)
1 Year, £30 for non-students (includes a £2 donation to HDDP)
1 Term, £15 for University of Sheffield students (includes a £1 donation to HDDP)
1 Term, £18 for non-students (includes a £1 donation to HDDP)

Outreach & Volunteering
As a society, we are commited to find new way to raise awareness and provide a positive, long lasting contribution to the Deaf Community. We are always looking for exciting new outreach opportunities to be active in the communtiy. For example, recently we collaborated with the Teddy Bear Hospital to raise money for Sheffield Deaf Children's Society (pictured below).
