British Sign Language course
We run a 9-11-week course of casual lessons twice a year. Classes usually run from October-December and February-April every year.
New memberships for this semester are open again for all students and members of the public over the age of 18 (under 18s may be allowed, if accompanied by a parent /guardian). Due to Government, University and SU restrictions on in-person activities, we unfortunately cant yet offer a definitive date for live sessions. The SU is planning to review their policies on a monthly basis.

We are planning an online taster session for October, with following sessions run weekly/fortnightly towards the end of the semester.
Session times are usually Wednesdays, 7-8.30pm. Venues for the sessions are normally posted on our Instagram and emailed to members!

We are usually unable to accept new beginners participants if they have missed the first two classes as it'll be tricky to catch up beyond that point!

Beginners 1 & Beginners 2 Course Outline
This is the perfect course for absolute beginners and is available to all members!
Our Level 1 material is typically divided into two units. Beginners 1 provides an introduction to BSL and requires no prior knowledge.
Topics covered include finger-spelling, numbers, colours, clothes, time, money, basic grammar and conversations. You will learn how to ask questions, describe your family, pets and the weather and how to give directions.
Upon completing Beginners 1, you will progress to Beginners 2, which builds upon the vocabulary taught in the first unit. Additional topics include food, drink, hobbies, sports and work.
Much of the material that we teach is based on Level 1 BSL syllabus, and if you feel prepared, we can put you in contact with Signature approved Level 1 BSL examiners, if you desire certification. However, you will be able to progress to further units in the society without taking the assessment.

If you wish to start the Beginners course, please pay for membership online prior to coming to class. We only accept online payments for membership.
After taster sessions, anyone who does not arrive with proof of membership may need to pay a replacement fee on arrival to partake in the class.
